Long December

The other day I had the headphones on while working hard in my cube, and Pandora played "Long December" by Counting Crows. Hopefully not an ominous start to the month. But it made me think that it'd be kinda fun to make a 12-track mix of songs with one track for every month. I thought of Greend Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends", Foo Fighters' "February Stars", and, of course, Guns N' Roses' "November Rain".

That's about as far as I've taken it, but thought I'd put it out there to see if anyone has any good ideas for the "Month Mix". Or, heck, add seven tracks for the days of the week if you want: Cure's "It's Friday, I'm in Love", Orgy's "Blue Monday"... though I don't think they actually say "Monday" in that song. I wonder how many songs are out there about Tuesdays and Thursdays?

Anyway, not sure how many people actually read this blog anymore, but feel free to play along and comment with song titles if you think of any.

  1. Lisa notes that 'Pizza Day' focuses on Friday, but discussed them all. David Bowie has 'Thursday's Child'. The Boomtown Rats have 'I Don't Like Mondays.' Lisa also notes 'Goodbye Ruby Tuesday' and the theme song from Happy Days, as well as U2's 'Sunday, Bloody Sunday'.

Tori Amos has a song called 'January Girl' and covered 'I Don't Like Mondays.' The Decemberists have a tune named 'July! July!'

Inevitably, we'll keep thinking about this, even if we don't want to.

  2. I can't believe I didn't think of Pizza Day! It's the best day of the week!

Yes, this has plagued me for a while now. I've been muttering "October... October..." in my cube for a couple days.

I started thinking of songs for years now too: Prince's "Party like it's 1999" and Smashing Pumpkins "1979".

  3. Doesn't both U2 as well as Evanesence have songs about October?

This is something I will most likely ponder until the full year is complete. This is potentially addicting.

Could you post it when/if it's completed? Then one day I can stop obsessing...

  4. 'Tuesday Afternoon' by The Moody Blues, 'August' by Rilo Kiley.

That would seem to leave us with every day of the week but Wednesday, all of the months between July and February except October.

I've written lyrics for a song called 'March', but nothing's come of them yet.

  5. Oh, and years? '1984' by David Bowie and '1974' by Robyn Hitchcock.

  6. I'm a little upset that I didn't think of Beck's "Sunday Sun". I know there are lots of Sunday songs, but this would be my pick.

I had to look up the Evanesence song- I have 2 CDs by them but neither have October. Too bad they don't actually say "October" in the lyrics.

If I/we ever put this together I'll post something.

  7. From my friend Kevin:
"Here's what I came up with. Mike Doughty has a track that I think is just called Wednesday on his newest album if you want a slow jam with some spanish thrown in. Dispatch, "Mayday". Atmosphere has "Liquor Lyle's Cool July" but best I can recall they never say the word July in the song. I know you already have a November, but if you don't want a huge ballad and need some hip hop there is Wyclef's, "Gone till November." And Counting Crows have "Long December." but don't put that after Doughty or it will make people too sad. Good luck.
